Project Overview
The CEL North initiative is a major transmission upgrade for Western Power, spanning over 300 kilometres from Malaga in Perth’s northern suburbs to Three Springs. While Western Power maintains ownership of these assets, Genus serves as the lead construction contractor. In a unique development, both organisations independently engaged Birds Eye Media several months apart to provide comprehensive documentation of project milestones across this remote high-voltage corridor. To support their requirements, they sought a professional team with the expertise to manage long-term time-lapse camera systems and complex drone operations throughout the project lifecycle.
Scope of Engagement
Our team provides comprehensive coverage across five strategic locations:
- Northern Terminal (Malaga, Perth metro)
- Neerabup
- Regans Ford
- Eneabba
- Three Springs
Western Power utilises time-lapse monitoring at all five terminals, while Genus maintains coverage at four, excluding Three Springs.
Since the project’s inception in May 2025, Birds Eye Media has provided consistent support through:
- The installation and ongoing management of time-lapse cameras, adapted as construction progressed
- Aerial drone documentation at critical project milestones
- The production of professional video reports for stakeholder distribution
The Challenge: Navigating Active High-Voltage Environments
A transmission corridor is far from a typical construction site. Working around energised infrastructure required the crew to complete two independent induction processes: Western Power’s FTECH training and Genus’s SHEQ platform, which covers everything from cultural awareness and modern slavery training to general wellbeing.
Managing these dual compliance frameworks meant juggling two sets of site contacts and exclusion zones, all while adhering to BEM’s strict CASA regulations for flight operations near high-voltage lines.
The Outcome
Western Power and Genus function with total independence, maintaining distinct reporting paths and separate purchase orders with no shared billing transparency. Despite this operational divide, Birds Eye Media delivers a unified high standard; the equipment and crew provide seamless, indistinguishable results for both organisations.
Long-term corridor documentation demands persistent effort. From technical upkeep of camera systems to aligning drone missions with weekly builds and managing weather delays, the logistics are intense. Fourteen months in, the reliability of the service remains identical to the first week, ensuring consistent documentation for two parallel clients.
